C1 Advanced vs IELTS Academic: format, scores and which English test to take

C1 Advanced and IELTS Academic are both accepted as proof of English for university study, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment is involved in both: it runs C1 Advanced and is one of the owners of IELTS. They are built very differently. IELTS measures any level on one test and reports a band from 0 to 9. C1 Advanced is aimed at one level, C1, and reports a Cambridge English Scale score with a certificate that does not expire. This guide compares them paper by paper, shows how their scores line up, and helps you choose.
Side by side

| Total time | About 4 hours | 2 hours 45 minutes |

How the scores compare
Cambridge publishes the C1 Advanced score needed for each IELTS band:
| IELTS band | C1 Advanced score | C1 Advanced result at that score |
|---|---|---|
| 7.5 | 191 | Grade C, C1 |
| 7.0 | 185 | Grade C, C1 |
| 6.5 | 176 | Certificate at B2 |
| 6.0 | 169 | Certificate at B2 |
| 5.5 | 162 | Certificate at B2 |
| 5.0 | 154 | No certificate |
Read it this way: if a course asks for IELTS 7.0, a C1 Advanced score of 185 is the comparable figure, but only if the course accepts C1 Advanced at all. Cambridge notes that IELTS is mapped to its scale but does not report on it. Always check the course's own page, which may also set a minimum per skill.
Which test suits you?
C1 Advanced may suit you if:
- You are already at or near C1 and want a certificate that does not expire, for example for work or a CV.
- You are stronger at grammar and vocabulary: Use of English is a fifth of your result.
- You find it easier to talk with another candidate than to answer an examiner alone.
- You like hearing each recording twice.
IELTS Academic may suit you if:
- A university, employer or visa office names IELTS specifically.
- You need a result soon and want a shorter test: 2 hours 45 minutes against about 4 hours.
- Your level is still around B2. On IELTS every half band counts; on C1 Advanced an overall score under 180 gives a B2 certificate, not a C1 one.
- You prefer a one-to-one speaking test.
Either way, check acceptance first. The test you take must be one your university or employer accepts, at the score they ask for. That decides more than format.
