C1 Advanced score calculator: Cambridge English Scale, grades and IELTS equivalent

C1 Advanced (CAE) does not give you a percentage or a pass mark per paper. You get five scores on the Cambridge English Scale, from 142 to 210, and your grade comes from their average alone. That makes the result easy to calculate once you know the rules, and it changes how you should prepare: a weak paper can be made up by the others. This guide shows the calculation with worked examples, the raw marks Cambridge publishes for its practice tests, and how a C1 Advanced score compares with an IELTS band.
The five scores
Your Statement of Results shows a Cambridge English Scale score for each of:
- Reading (Reading and Use of English Parts 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
- Use of English (Parts 2, 3 and 4)
- Writing
- Listening
- Speaking
Each counts equally. The overall score is the five added together and divided by five, rounded to the nearest whole number.
From overall score to grade
| Overall score | Grade | CEFR level on the certificate |
|---|---|---|
| 200 to 210 | A | C2 |
| 193 to 199 | B | C1 |
| 180 to 192 | C | C1 |
| 160 to 179 | Level B2 | B2 |
| 142 to 159 | No certificate; the score is reported |
There is no pass mark on a single paper. You can score 172 in Writing and still receive a C1 certificate if the average reaches 180.
Worked examples
| Candidate | Reading | Use of English | Writing | Listening | Speaking | Total | Average | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 184 | 178 | 176 | 190 | 182 | 910 | 182 | Grade C, C1 |
| B | 196 | 201 | 188 | 205 | 199 | 989 | 197.8, so 198 | Grade B, C1 |
| C | 175 | 170 | 168 | 182 | 177 | 872 | 174.4, so 174 | Certificate at B2 |
Candidate A scored below 180 in two papers and still has a C1 certificate. Candidate C reached 180 in Listening but not overall.
How much the other papers must make up. For an overall 180 you need a total of 900 (or 898, since 179.6 rounds to 180). If your Writing is 170, the other four must total about 728 to 730, an average of about 182 each. Every point you lose on one paper must be found, divided by four, on the others.
How many marks do you need on each paper?
Cambridge publishes the raw marks that give 160, 180 and 200 on its own practice tests (factsheet "Converting practice test scores to Cambridge English Scale scores", November 2023):
| Paper | Raw marks | For 160 (B2) | For 180 (C1) | For 200 (C2) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 50 | 23 (46%) | 32 (64%) | 43 (86%) |
| Use of English | 28 | 11 (39%) | 16 (57%) | 23 (82%) |
| Writing | 40 | 16 (40%) | 24 (60%) | 34 (85%) |
| Listening | 30 | 13 (43%) | 18 (60%) | 26 (87%) |
| Speaking | 75 | 30 (40%) | 45 (60%) | 66 (88%) |
As a rule of thumb, about 60% of the marks on a paper puts you at the start of the C1 range, and about 86% at C2. Use of English needs the smallest share for 180 (16 of 28) because its questions are the hardest per mark. These figures belong to Cambridge's practice tests; on another paper the raw marks for each score can differ slightly.

What a C1 Advanced score means in IELTS terms
Cambridge publishes this comparison for institutions. The Cambridge English Scale score is the one needed for each IELTS band:
| IELTS band | C1 Advanced score |
|---|---|
| 7.5 | 191 |
| 7.0 | 185 |
| 6.5 | 176 |
| 6.0 | 169 |
| 5.5 | 162 |
| 5.0 | 154 |
So a Grade C at 185 compares with IELTS 7.0, and 191 with IELTS 7.5. Cambridge notes that IELTS is mapped to the scale but does not report on it, so the comparison runs one way; a university decides for itself whether it accepts C1 Advanced and at what score. For more, read C1 Advanced vs IELTS.
Three ways to raise the overall score
- Find the lowest of the five. Ten points gained on your weakest paper lift the overall score by two, which is often the gap between Grade C and Grade B (192 to 193+) or between B2 and C1 (179 to 180).
- Do not neglect Use of English. It is one fifth of the result from only 28 marks; each mark there is worth roughly twice a Reading mark on the scale. See Use of English tips.
- Answer everything. There is no negative marking, and a partly right Part 4 transformation can earn one of its two marks.

Frequently asked questions
What is the pass mark for C1 Advanced?
An overall score of 180 gives a C1 certificate (Grade C). From 160 to 179 you receive a certificate at B2, and from 200 a Grade A certificate at C2.
Can I fail one paper and still pass C1 Advanced?
Yes. There is no pass mark per paper. Only the average of the five scores decides the grade, so a low score on one paper can be made up by the others.
What percentage do I need for C1 Advanced?
On Cambridge's practice tests, about 60% of the marks on a paper gives 180, the start of C1. Use of English needs a little less (16 of 28) and Reading a little more (32 of 50).
What IELTS score is equal to C1 Advanced 180?
Cambridge's table puts IELTS 6.5 at 176 and IELTS 7.0 at 185, so 180 falls between 6.5 and 7.0.
Does the C1 Advanced certificate expire?
No. Each university or employer decides how recent a result it will accept.
