PTE Core 2026: test dates, format, how to book and free practice tests

PTE Core is Pearson's computer-based test of everyday English, used mainly for Canadian immigration and citizenship. There is no fixed PTE Core exam date: you pick a test centre and a free slot. This guide covers how to book, what IRCC accepts it for, the PTE Core exam pattern, how the 10 to 90 scores relate to Canadian Language Benchmarks, and a six-week plan with mock tests.

Test dates and booking
PTE Core has no national exam date. You see free slots on Pearson's PTE Core availability search. On the PTE Core page (checked 20 October 2026), Pearson says:
- Most test takers get results within two business days; some take up to five business days.
- PTE Core is taken at an authorised test centre on a computer; it cannot be taken at home.
- You can reschedule for free up to 14 days before your test date.
- IRCC accepts PTE Core for citizenship applications and for all economic immigration programmes that need an IRCC-approved English test.
If you are aiming at an Express Entry draw or a citizenship deadline, leave room for the result, for entering it in your profile, and for a retake if a skill falls short.
How to book PTE Core
- Check the CLB level your programme needs in each skill on canada.ca, using IRCC's test equivalency charts.
- Open the availability search, enter your city and pick a centre and slot, at least 24 hours ahead.
- Create a myPTE account with your details exactly as in your passport.
- Answer the booking questions, accept the policies and pay.
- Keep the confirmation email; the booking appears in myPTE, where your scores will also be.
Keep ready: your passport. Pearson's booking guide says you show it at the test centre and that details which do not match it stop you from sitting the test. Pearson's Score Guide adds that IRCC does not accept a paper or PDF score report.
PTE Core exam pattern
| Part | Time | Task types (number in a test) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Speaking and Writing | 50 to 65 minutes | Personal introduction (not scored), Read Aloud (6–7), Repeat Sentence (10–12), Describe Image (3–4), Respond to a Situation (2–4), Answer Short Question (5–6), Summarize Written Text (1–2), Write Email (2–3) |
| 2. Reading | 27 to 37 minutes | Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks (5–6), Multiple Choice Multiple Answers (1–2), Reorder Paragraph (2–3), Fill in the Blanks (4–5), Multiple Choice Single Answer (1–2) |
| 3. Listening | 22 to 37 minutes | Summarize Spoken Text (1–2), Multiple Choice Multiple Answers (1–2), Fill in the Blanks (2–3), Multiple Choice Single Answer (1–2), Select Missing Word (1–2), Highlight Incorrect Words (1–2), Write from Dictation (3–4) |
The counts are the ranges in Pearson's January 2026 Score Guide. Write Email gets full credit for form at 50 to 120 words; Summarize Written Text at 25 to 50 words.
Scoring. Scores run from 10 to 90. Some tasks count towards two skills (Read Aloud counts for reading and speaking, Repeat Sentence for listening and speaking), so the overall score is not the average. The Score Guide prints an alignment from PTE Core scores to CLB levels 3 to 10 and says it can change; IRCC's own chart is the one your application uses.
PTE Core syllabus
PTE Core tests general English for daily life and work rather than academic English:
- Speaking: reading aloud, repeating sentences, describing images, responding to everyday situations, short answers.
- Writing: emails and short summaries.
- Reading: gap-fills, multiple choice and reordering paragraphs.
- Listening: summaries, gap-fills, spotting changed words, dictation.
Every task with its timing is on our PTE Core syllabus page.
A six-week plan before your test date
| Week | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | One full timed PTE Core mock test. Note the task types that cost most. |
| 2 | Repeat Sentence and Read Aloud every day, recorded: there are up to 19 of these in one test. |
| 3 | Write Email: three emails a week, covering all three points in the prompt, 50 to 120 words. |
| 4 | Fill in the Blanks and Write from Dictation daily; spelling counts word by word. |
| 5 | Second full mock. Practise Respond to a Situation with 20 seconds to prepare and 40 to speak. |
| 6 | A last mock early in the week, then light practice. Check your passport and centre address. |

There is no fixed date. Search Pearson's availability page for your city and book any free slot.
Is PTE Core accepted for Canada PR and citizenship?
Pearson's PTE Core page says IRCC accepts it for citizenship and for all economic immigration programmes that need an IRCC-approved English test. Check the level your programme needs on canada.ca.
Is there negative marking in PTE Core?
Only in some tasks. Multiple Choice Multiple Answers and Highlight Incorrect Words take a point off for each wrong choice, though an item never goes below zero.
What is the difference between PTE Core and PTE Academic?
PTE Core tests everyday English and is the Pearson test IRCC accepts; PTE Academic tests academic English for universities and other visas. They have different tasks, such as Write Email in Core instead of Write Essay.
What PTE Core score do I need for CLB 7?
Pearson's Score Guide aligns PTE Core scores to CLB levels, but IRCC's equivalency chart is the one that counts. Read the current chart on canada.ca rather than a copy.
How long are PTE Core scores valid?
Pearson's teacher guide says scores are valid for two years.
