CELPIP-General is a Canadian English test run by Paragon Testing Enterprises and accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residence and citizenship. All four skills are taken on a computer in one sitting of under three hours, and each is reported as a CELPIP level that matches a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). There is no national CELPIP exam date: you choose a sitting at a test centre on the official site. This guide explains how booking works, the CELPIP exam pattern, how levels map to CLB, and a six-week plan with mock tests.

Test dates and booking

CELPIP-General does not have one exam date. Test centres run sittings, and you see dates and seats by city on celpip.ca. We could not read celpip.ca on 20 October 2026 (the site refused automated access), so this guide gives no dates, fees or result times: check them on the official site when you book.

Plan from your deadline backwards, whether it is an immigration profile or a citizenship application. Leave room for the result to arrive and for a second attempt if one skill falls short of the CLB level you need.

How to book CELPIP-General

  1. Check the CLB level your programme needs in each skill on canada.ca, using IRCC's test equivalency charts. Higher levels can also earn more Express Entry points.
  2. Decide which test you need. For citizenship, the shorter CELPIP-General LS (listening and speaking only) is also used; confirm on canada.ca that it is accepted for your application.
  3. On celpip.ca, follow the registration steps: choose your city and a sitting, and pay.
  4. Keep the confirmation and read the test-day rules there, including the ID you must bring.

Keep ready: valid ID with the name you used to register, and the CLB targets you need in each skill.

CELPIP-General exam pattern

Component Time Questions Parts or tasks
Listening About 47 to 55 minutes 38 in 6 parts Problem Solving, Daily Life Conversation, Listening for Information, News Item, Discussion, Viewpoints. Each recording heard once
Reading About 55 to 60 minutes 38 in 4 parts Correspondence, Apply a Diagram, Reading for Information, Reading for Viewpoints
Writing About 53 to 60 minutes 2 tasks Writing an Email; Responding to Survey Questions
Speaking About 15 to 20 minutes 8 tasks, after a practice task Giving Advice, Personal Experience, Describing a Scene, Making Predictions, Comparing and Persuading, Difficult Situation, Expressing Opinions, Unusual Situation

Writing is typed. Speaking is recorded through a headset with no examiner in the room, and each task has a short time to prepare and a time to speak. Timings vary a little between sources, so check the format on celpip.ca.

Scoring. Each skill gets a CELPIP level, and levels 3 to 12 are the same as CLB levels 3 to 12. IRCC looks at the level in each skill; there is no total that counts. There is no pass mark on the test itself. Paragon does not publish how listening and reading marks become a level, so any practice level is an estimate.

CELPIP-General syllabus

CELPIP tests English for everyday life and work in Canada:

  • Listening: solving a problem, daily conversations, news, discussions and opinions.
  • Reading: emails and letters, reading a diagram, information texts and viewpoints.
  • Writing: a practical email and an opinion on a survey question.
  • Speaking: advice, experiences, describing scenes, predicting, persuading, handling a difficult situation.

Each part is on our CELPIP-General syllabus page.

A six-week plan before your test date

Week What to do
1 One full CELPIP-General mock test, timed. Write down your estimated level in each skill next to your CLB target.
2 Reading: one part a day, timed, especially Apply a Diagram and Viewpoints.
3 Writing: an email and a survey response three times a week, typed, within the time.
4 Listening: two parts a day. Speaking: two tasks a day recorded with a headset, then listened back.
5 Second full mock. Spend the week on the skill furthest below your CLB target.
6 A last mock early in the week, then light practice. Confirm your centre, time and ID.

Use how to analyse a mock test after each one.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next CELPIP test date?

There is no single date. Sittings are listed by city on celpip.ca; we could not read that site on 20 October 2026, so check it directly.

What CELPIP score do I need for CLB 7?

CELPIP level 7 is CLB 7, in each skill. Levels 3 to 12 match CLB levels one to one, so you need level 7 in every skill your programme sets at CLB 7.

Is there negative marking in CELPIP?

Paragon does not publish how listening and reading marks become a level, so check celpip.ca for its rules. Either way, answer every question: a blank cannot earn anything.

Is CELPIP accepted for Canadian citizenship?

Yes. IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, or the shorter CELPIP-General LS, as proof of listening and speaking for citizenship. Confirm the current rules on canada.ca.

CELPIP or IELTS General Training: which is easier?

Neither is easier in general. CELPIP is all on a computer in Canadian English with recorded Speaking; IELTS General Training has a face-to-face Speaking test. Try a mock of each and choose the format that suits you.
