Australian citizenship test: Values: rule of law practice questions
Follow the law even when nobody is watching. It applies to everyone in Australia, whatever their background.
Question 1
The values account says that if you break the law you
- will be excused the first time, as a new arrival
- may ask a religious court to replace the Australian court
- will face penalties
Answer: will face penalties
Everybody should obey the law, and breaking it brings penalties. Religious law has no legal status of its own, so it does not replace an Australian court.
Question 2
Under the Rule of Law, Australians are
- ranked so that community leaders are excused from ordinary criminal laws
- equal before the law, and no person or group is above it
- free to pick which statutes apply inside their own household
Answer: equal before the law, and no person or group is above it
All Australians are equal in relation to the law, and no person or group is above it. Leaders are not excused, and a household cannot choose its own set of laws.
Question 3
Australian laws apply to
- Australian citizens only, and not to permanent residents
- everyone in Australia, whatever their background or culture
- people born in Australia, and not to citizens by conferral
Answer: everyone in Australia, whatever their background or culture
Australian laws apply to all people in Australia, regardless of background or culture. Citizenship by conferral does not put a person outside the law, and nor does permanent residence.
