SSC GD Constable 2027: exam date, pattern, syllabus and how to apply

The SSC GD Constable examination is how the Staff Selection Commission, for the Ministry of Home Affairs, recruits Constables (General Duty) in BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB and the Secretariat Security Force, and Riflemen (General Duty) in the Assam Rifles. It is open to candidates who have passed Class 10. The next cycle is the Constable (GD) Examination, 2027. As of 20 October 2026, SSC has not yet published its notice: SSC's tentative calendar for 2026-27 plans the advertisement for September 2026, applications to close in October 2026, and the computer-based exam in January to March 2027. This guide covers what is known, how to apply when the notice comes, the pattern and a plan to start now.

The notice for the 2027 examination had not appeared on SSC's notice board when we checked, so these months are a plan, not confirmed dates. For comparison, the 2026 cycle's notice came out on 1 December 2025 with applications open until 31 December 2025, and SSC's notice of 2 January 2026 set the exam from 23 February 2026 onwards. When the 2027 notice is published, it will be on ssc.gov.in, and our SSC GD Constable exam dates page will be updated.
How to apply
- Read the notice on ssc.gov.in when it appears: posts, vacancies by state, age limit, and physical standards.
- Complete the One-Time Registration (OTR) on ssc.gov.in or the mySSC app. An OTR made on the old ssc.nic.in website does not work on the new one.
- Choose Aadhaar authentication if you can; SSC's recent notices say such applications are not rejected over the photograph or signature.
- Fill in the form, including your state of domicile (vacancies are filled state-wise) and your force preferences, and let the application take your live photograph.
- Upload your signature, pay the fee by the last date and keep the printout.
Keep ready: your Class 10 certificate (also proof of date of birth), domicile certificate, category certificate if you claim reservation, NCC certificate if you hold one, a working mobile number and email, and a scan of your signature. In the 2026 cycle the age limit was 18 to 23 years on 1 January 2026, with relaxations for reserved categories; the 2027 notice will give its own date.
Exam pattern
From the 2026 notice:
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | General Intelligence and Reasoning | 20 | 40 |
| B | General Knowledge and General Awareness | 20 | 40 |
| C | Elementary Mathematics | 20 | 40 |
| D | English or Hindi | 20 | 40 |
| Total (60 minutes) | 80 | 160 |
A wrong answer costs 0.25 marks; older notices took off 0.5, so check the figure in the 2027 notice. You can move between the four parts and change answers until the hour is up. NCC certificate holders get bonus marks of 5%, 3% or 2% of the maximum for C, B or A certificates.
To be shortlisted for the physical tests you need at least 30% (UR), 25% (OBC/EWS) or 20% (others), and then a high enough place in the merit for your state, category and gender. The Physical Efficiency Test is a race: 5 km in 24 minutes for men and 1.6 km in 8½ minutes for women (outside Ladakh). The Physical Standard Test checks height, chest and weight. Both are qualifying; the final merit is the normalised CBE marks plus NCC bonus marks.
Syllabus
- Reasoning (Part A): analogies, similarities and differences, number and letter series, coding-decoding, relationships and directions, arithmetical reasoning, ranking, and mostly non-verbal figure questions.
- General Knowledge (Part B): current events, everyday science, history and culture, geography of India and its neighbours, the economy, polity and the Constitution, sports.
- Elementary Mathematics (Part C): number systems, decimals and fractions, percentages, ratio, averages, interest, profit and loss, mensuration, time and distance, time and work. No calculator.
- English or Hindi (Part D): basic understanding and comprehension.

A plan for the months ahead
If the exam falls in January to March 2027, you have about three to five months. Train for the written exam and the running test together:
- Month 1: one full SSC GD Constable mock to see your level. Daily: one hour of mathematics (percentages, ratio, averages, time and work), 30 minutes of reasoning, 30 minutes of GK. Start running three or four times a week.
- Month 2: one full mock a week, analysed the same day, and topic practice on what it shows. Read the newspaper daily for current events.
- Month 3 and after: two mocks a week; aim to finish in about 50 minutes and use the rest to review. Time your run against the PET standard every week.
With +2 against −0.25, a wrong answer costs one-eighth of a right one, so a guess between two options is clearly worth it. Our article on negative marking explains the arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions
When will the SSC GD Constable 2027 notification come?
SSC's tentative calendar planned it for September 2026, but it had not been published on 20 October 2026. Check the notice board at ssc.gov.in.
Is there negative marking in SSC GD Constable?
Yes. Under the 2026 notice a wrong answer costs 0.25 marks against 2 for a right one. Unanswered questions score nothing.
What is the age limit for SSC GD Constable?
In the 2026 cycle it was 18 to 23 years on 1 January 2026, with relaxations for reserved categories. The 2027 notice will set its own reference date.
Is the PET in SSC GD Constable marked?
No. The Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test are qualifying only. The final merit comes from the computer-based exam marks, normalised, plus any NCC bonus.
Can I choose Hindi instead of English in Part D?
Part D tests basic English or basic Hindi, and in past cycles candidates answered it in one of the two. Check how the 2027 notice describes the choice.
