SSC CGL vs SSC CHSL: eligibility, pattern and which to choose

SSC CGL and SSC CHSL are the two largest general exams held by the Staff Selection Commission, and many students sit both. They look alike on the surface, with the same four subjects in Tier-I, but they differ in eligibility, posts and, from 2026, in how the Tier-I clock works. This article sets the two side by side.

Who can apply

  • SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) is for graduates. It recruits to Group B and Group C posts in the ministries, departments and offices of the Government of India.
  • SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) needs Class 12 or equivalent. It recruits Lower Division Clerks and Junior Secretariat Assistants (Pay Level-2) and Data Entry Operators (Pay Level-4 and 5). For the 2026 examination the age limit is 18 to 27 years on 1 August 2026, with the usual relaxations.

A graduate can sit both. A student with Class 12 only can sit CHSL now and CGL after graduating.

Tier-I side by side

SSC CGL Tier-I SSC CHSL Tier-I
Questions 100 100
Subjects Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English: 25 each General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude (basic arithmetic), English: 25 each
Time 60 minutes, one clock for the whole paper 60 minutes, with a 15-minute timer for each subject (2026 notice)
Marks +2 / −0.5, 200 in all +2 / −0.5, 200 in all

The difference that matters most is the clock. In CGL Tier-I you can move between sections and spend more time on Quant if you finish General Awareness early. In the 2026 CHSL notice each subject has its own 15 minutes, so time saved in one subject cannot be used in another. Plan each 15 minutes on its own when you prepare for CHSL.

The Quant level also differs: CHSL Tier-I tests basic arithmetic, while CGL goes further into algebra, geometry, trigonometry and data interpretation.

Tier-II side by side

SSC CGL Tier-II Paper I is the deciding stage of CGL. It is sat in timed parts: Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning (30 questions each) in the first hour, English Language and Comprehension (45) and General Awareness (25) in the second, then 15 minutes of Computer Knowledge. A right answer earns 3 and a wrong one costs 1. Computer Knowledge is qualifying only.

SSC CHSL Tier-II Session-I has Section-I (Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning, 30 questions each, one hour), Section-II (English Language and Comprehension, 40 questions, and General Awareness, 20 questions, one hour) and Section-III (Computer Knowledge, 15 minutes, qualifying), also at +3 / −1. Session-II is a Skill Test for Data Entry Operators or a Typing Test for LDC/JSA, both qualifying. The final CHSL merit is made from Sections I and II of Tier-II.

So in both exams, Tier-II carries the final merit, has the heavier +3 / −1 marking, and ends with a computer or skill test that you must pass but that adds no marks.

Which should you choose?

If you are a graduate, you do not have to choose: prepare for CGL and sit CHSL as well. The syllabus overlaps heavily, and CGL preparation covers everything in CHSL Tier-I. The things to add for CHSL are:

  • practice under sectional timers, so 15 minutes per subject feels normal;
  • typing practice, if you are aiming at LDC/JSA, or data entry speed for DEO posts, well before the exam.

If you have Class 12 only, CHSL is your exam now, and its preparation is a strong base for CGL later.

Preparing for both

  • Build the common base first: arithmetic, grammar and vocabulary, the main reasoning types and static GK.
  • Add CGL's advanced maths (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, data interpretation) as the next layer.
  • In mocks, alternate between the two patterns in the last two months, so neither clock surprises you.
  • Read our SSC CGL Tier-I strategy for a section-by-section plan, and negative marking for how the +2 / −0.5 and +3 / −1 schemes change when to guess.

Sit timed mocks for both on Mockrooms: SSC CGL Tier-I, SSC CGL Tier-II and SSC CHSL. Always check the current SSC notification for your year, because posts, timers and dates change.
