PTE Core vs CELPIP General: which English test is better for Canada PR and citizenship?

For Canadian permanent residence, IRCC's Express Entry page lists three approved English tests: CELPIP, IELTS and PTE Core (the General Training option for IELTS). PTE Core and CELPIP-General are the two built for this use and both are taken entirely on a computer, so many applicants choose between them. They differ in length, in how speaking is tested, and above all in how a score becomes a CLB level. This guide compares them from the two tests' own exam files on this site and IRCC's page, read on 22 October 2026.

How each turns into CLB

CELPIP is the simplest: a CELPIP 7 is CLB 7, a CELPIP 9 is CLB 9. Nothing to convert.

PTE Core needs a chart, and each skill has its own ranges. The minimum scores for the levels most people need:

To reach Listening Reading Speaking Writing
CLB 4 28 33 42 41
CLB 7 60 60 68 69
CLB 9 82 78 84 88
CLB 10 89 88 89 90

The full chart and worked examples are in PTE Core score to CLB.

Which suits you?

PTE Core may suit you if:

  • You want the shorter test: about two hours against up to three.
  • You are comfortable with short, fast tasks. Repeat Sentence and Write from Dictation reward a good memory for spoken sentences and accurate typing.
  • You like that tasks count twice: a strong Write from Dictation lifts both listening and writing.
  • You want results quickly: Pearson says most arrive within two business days.

CELPIP-General may suit you if:

  • You prefer longer, realistic tasks: describing a scene, giving advice, writing a full email or survey answer.
  • You want each skill tested separately, so a weak skill does not drag another down.
  • You want the score to read as a CLB level directly.
  • You need only listening and speaking for citizenship: the LS version is shorter.

For citizenship, IRCC asks applicants aged 18 to 54 for CLB 4 in speaking and listening. With PTE Core that means Speaking 42 and Listening 28.

Practise both before you book

The best way to choose is to take one full practice test of each and compare which gives you the higher lowest skill, since that is what usually decides whether you meet a programme's minimum. Our free PTE Core mock tests and CELPIP-General mock tests are timed like the real tests and estimate a score for each skill.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE Core accepted for Canada PR?

Yes. IRCC's Express Entry page lists PTE Core with CELPIP and IELTS as approved English tests.

Is PTE Core easier than CELPIP?

Neither is easier for everyone. PTE Core is shorter with many quick tasks; CELPIP has fewer, longer tasks. Take a practice test of each and compare your weakest skill.

What PTE Core score equals CELPIP 7?

CELPIP 7 is CLB 7. For CLB 7 in PTE Core you need at least Listening 60, Reading 60, Speaking 68 and Writing 69.

Which test gives results faster?

Pearson says most PTE Core results arrive within two business days, some up to five. Check Paragon's site for current CELPIP timings.
