JEE Advanced 2027: exam date, pattern, syllabus and how to apply

JEE Advanced is the entrance examination for bachelor's, integrated master's and dual-degree programmes at the IITs. It is run under the Joint Admission Board and organised by an IIT (IIT Roorkee for 2026). You cannot apply to it directly: Indian nationals must first qualify the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE Main. The thing most students want to know is the JEE Advanced 2027 exam date, and it has not been announced yet (checked 20 October 2026 on jeeadv.ac.in). That site still shows the 2026 cycle, when the exam was held on Sunday 17 May 2026.

JEE Advanced 2027 exam date
As of 20 October 2026, jeeadv.ac.in has not announced the 2027 date or the 2027 organising institute. For reference, the 2026 cycle ran like this on the official site:
| Event (2026 cycle) | Date |
|---|---|
| Exam date announced | 5 December 2025 |
| Registration | 23 April to 2 May 2026 (later extended to 5 May) |
| Exam | Sunday 17 May 2026: Paper 1 09:00–12:00 IST, Paper 2 14:30–17:30 IST |
| Architecture Aptitude Test (B.Arch only) | 4 June 2026 |
The 2027 date, brochure and registration window will appear on jeeadv.ac.in. Watch the JEE Main site as well, since you need a JEE Main result first. The tentative dates for JEE Main 2027 Session 1 are in our JEE Main 2027 guide.
How to apply for JEE Advanced
The steps below are how the 2026 cycle worked; the 2027 information brochure will confirm them.
- Qualify JEE Main Paper 1. Indian nationals must qualify the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE Main. Who counts as qualified is set out in the brochure.
- Check the other eligibility conditions in the 2027 brochure when it is out, and do not rely on last year's.
- Register on the JEE Advanced portal in the window announced on jeeadv.ac.in, using your JEE Main details.
- Upload the documents the brochure lists and pay the fee in time; in 2026 the last day for the fee was two days after registration closed.
- Download the admit card when it is released, and sit both papers. Only candidates who sit both are ranked.
If you want B.Arch at IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur or IIT (BHU) Varanasi, register for the Architecture Aptitude Test after the result.
Exam pattern
The brochure does not fix the question types; it says the marking scheme is printed in the instructions on the day. This is what the 2026 papers used, per subject:
| Paper 1, each subject | Questions | Marks per question |
|---|---|---|
| Single correct option | 4 | +3, −1 |
| One or more correct options | 4 | +4 full, partial credit, −1 |
| Numerical answer | 4 | +4, no negative |
| Matching lists | 4 | +4, −1 |
| Subject total | 16 | 60 |
| Paper 2, each subject | Questions | Marks per question |
|---|---|---|
| Single correct option | 4 | +3, −1 |
| One or more correct options | 5 | +4 full, partial credit, −1 |
| Numerical answer | 5 | +4, no negative |
| Two stems with two numerical questions each | 4 | +2, no negative |
| Subject total | 18 | 60 |
Each subject is out of 120 across both papers, and the aggregate is out of 360. Inside each paper, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics share one 3-hour clock and can be answered in any order.
On a one-or-more-correct question, choosing all the correct options and no wrong one gets +4; choosing only some correct options gets +1 for each; choosing any wrong option gets −1. A numerical answer with more than two decimal places is truncated or rounded to two.
Syllabus
The syllabus is published on jeeadv.ac.in and for 2026 was the same as for 2025.
- Physics: mechanics, rotation and gravitation; heat, thermodynamics, oscillations and waves; electrostatics, current, magnetism and electromagnetic induction; optics; modern physics.
- Chemistry: physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, including coordination compounds, solutions and states of matter.
- Mathematics: algebra, matrices and probability; differential and integral calculus; analytical geometry; trigonometry; vectors.

A plan for the months that are left
JEE Advanced comes after JEE Main, so the two plans overlap.
| Period | What to do |
|---|---|
| Now to JEE Main Session 1 | Prepare for JEE Main first; it is the gate. Once a week, solve a set of multi-correct and matching-list questions so the Advanced formats stay familiar. |
| Between the JEE Main sessions | Sit one full JEE Advanced mock a week as two 3-hour papers on the same day, with the real break between them. |
| After JEE Main results until the exam | Two full mocks a week. Review each paper by question type: where did the −1 penalties come from? |
The marking rewards caution on multi-correct questions. If you are sure of two options and unsure of a third, marking the two you are sure of gets +2; adding a wrong third turns that into −1. Numerical questions carry no penalty, so never leave one blank if you have any value. Our article on negative marking explains the general rule, and how to analyse a mock test shows how to review.

Frequently asked questions
What is the JEE Advanced 2027 exam date?
It had not been announced on jeeadv.ac.in as of 20 October 2026. In the 2026 cycle the date was announced in December 2025 and the exam was held on 17 May 2026.
Is there negative marking in JEE Advanced?
Yes, on some question types. In 2026, single-correct, multi-correct and matching-list questions cost 1 mark for a wrong answer, while numerical questions had no negative marking.
Can I apply for JEE Advanced without JEE Main?
Indian nationals cannot: they must qualify the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE Main first. The brochure for each year sets out who qualifies and the other conditions.
What is the JEE Advanced pass mark?
There is no fixed pass mark. To appear in a rank list you need a minimum percentage in each subject and in the aggregate; in 2026 that was 10% and 35% for the common rank list, and lower for reserved categories. The brochure says the aggregate percentage may be lowered.
Is JEE Advanced in Hindi?
Yes. The papers are in English and Hindi, and you can switch language during the test. If the versions differ, the English version prevails.
Does a JEE Advanced rank guarantee an IIT seat?
No. Qualifying and filling choices do not by themselves allot a seat; seats are allotted later in the joint seat-allocation process, which also uses a Class 12 performance condition.
