If you are looking for a GATE ECE mock test, there is a free full-length one for the GATE 2027 Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) paper at /exam/gate/ec: 65 questions, 100 marks and 3 hours, with the same mix of multiple-choice, multiple-select and numerical questions and the same negative marking as the real paper. This article explains that pattern, lists the official EC syllabus as IIT Madras published it for GATE 2027, and gives a plan for the weeks left before the exam, which is held on 6–7, 13–14 and 20–21 February 2027 (GATE 2027 brochure, read 21 October 2026). The day and session of the EC paper will be in the full schedule, which the brochure says will be notified later on the GATE 2027 website.

GATE EC exam pattern

The EC paper has the same shape as every GATE paper: 65 questions for 100 marks in a single 3-hour sitting on a computer at a centre in India, in English only.

Part Questions Marks
General Aptitude 10 (five of 1 mark, five of 2 marks) 15
Engineering Mathematics inside the 55 subject questions 13
Electronics and Communication inside the 55 subject questions 72
Total 65 100

The 55 subject questions carry 85 marks. With every question worth 1 or 2 marks, that can only be 25 questions of 1 mark and 30 of 2 marks; the brochure gives the marks, not those counts, and it does not say how many questions make up the 13 mathematics marks.

Three kinds of question appear:

  • Multiple choice (MCQ): one right answer out of four. A wrong answer costs 1/3 mark on a 1-mark question and 2/3 mark on a 2-mark question.
  • Multiple select (MSQ): one or more right answers out of four. No negative marking, and no partial credit: you must pick exactly the right set.
  • Numerical answer (NAT): you type a number with the on-screen keypad. No negative marking.

Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator is allowed. The published GATE score (350 at the general qualifying mark, 900 at the top of the cohort) depends on everyone who sat the EC paper, so a mock test can only show raw marks out of 100.

GATE EC syllabus

These are the eight sections of the official GATE 2027 EC syllabus. GATE does not publish a weightage for each section; the only fixed weights are 15 marks for General Aptitude, 13 for Engineering Mathematics and 72 for the rest of the subject.

Section Main topics
1. Engineering Mathematics Linear algebra (vector spaces, rank, eigenvalues), calculus (multiple, line, surface and volume integrals, Taylor series), differential equations, vector analysis (Gauss, Green and Stokes theorems), complex analysis (Cauchy's theorem, Laurent series, residues), probability and statistics
2. Networks, Signals and Systems Node and mesh analysis, network theorems, phasors, Laplace transform solution of circuits, 2-port parameters; LTI systems, convolution, Fourier series and transform, sampling; DTFT, DFT, z-transform, FIR and IIR filters
3. Electronic Devices Energy bands, carrier concentration, drift and diffusion, continuity equation; P-N junction, Zener diode, BJT, MOS capacitor, MOSFET and scaling, LED, photodiode, solar cell
4. Analog Circuits Clipping, clamping, rectifiers; BJT and MOSFET amplifiers (biasing, small signal, frequency response), current mirrors, differential amplifiers; op-amp circuits, active filters, oscillators, Miller compensation, phase margin
5. Digital Circuits Number representation, Boolean algebra, K-maps, static CMOS gates, multiplexers, decoders; latches, flip-flops, counters, FSMs, setup and hold time; ADCs and DACs; ROM, SRAM, DRAM; machine instructions, data path and pipelining
6. Control Systems Feedback, transfer functions, block diagrams, signal flow graphs, transient and steady state, Routh-Hurwitz and Nyquist, Bode and root locus, compensators and PID, state variable models
7. Communications Random processes and power spectral density; AM and FM; entropy, mutual information and channel capacity; PCM, DPCM, ASK, PSK, FSK, QAM, ISI, MAP and ML detection, matched filter, BER; Hamming codes and CRC
8. Electromagnetics Maxwell's equations, boundary conditions, plane waves, skin depth, transmission lines, Smith chart, S-parameters, waveguides, optical fibres, dipole and monopole antennas, arrays

General Aptitude, common to all papers, covers verbal, quantitative (including data interpretation), analytical and spatial aptitude. Our GATE syllabus page puts all the papers side by side.

How to prepare for GATE EC

Start with a baseline. Sit one full GATE EC mock test under exam conditions before you plan anything. Mark each wrong answer by section and by type (MCQ, MSQ, NAT). That tells you where your 3 hours actually go.

Weeks 1–6: finish and fix the core. Networks and signals, analog and digital circuits feed many other sections, so close gaps there first. Work one section at a time: notes, then 20 to 30 timed questions of mixed types. Two short sessions a week of General Aptitude are enough to keep 15 marks safe.

Weeks 7–11: second pass and weekly mocks. Revise control, communications and electromagnetics, which are formula-heavy and easy to forget. Sit one full mock a week using only an on-screen calculator. After each, list the MCQs you got wrong: those are the only answers that cost marks, and the list shows where guessing hurt you.

Weeks 12–15: exam rhythm. Two full mocks a week, in the session (forenoon 9:30–12:30 or afternoon 2:30–5:30) your admit card gives you. In NAT questions, read the rounding instruction twice; a slip scores zero. In the last week revise your formula sheet and rest.

Three habits that save marks on EC:

  1. Treat MSQs carefully. There is no penalty but also no partial credit, so tick an option only when you have checked it.
  2. Leave a doubtful MCQ blank only when you cannot remove any option. With a 1/3 penalty, a guess between two options is worth taking; see negative marking: when to guess.
  3. Do the 1-mark questions you know first. Then return to long 2-mark numericals in circuits and communications.

Choosing a second paper

GATE lets you sit one or two papers. In the brochure's tentative table, EC as the first paper may be combined with CS, DA, EE, IN, PH or RA. A second paper means a second 3-hour sitting on another session, so add it only if you have time to prepare for it.

Free GATE EC practice test

The free GATE EC mock test follows the 2027 pattern above and gives marks for General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and the EC subject separately. For dates, eligibility and the application steps, read GATE 2027: exam dates, pattern, syllabus and how to apply, and see all GATE papers on the GATE page.
