C2 Proficiency, still widely called CPE, is Cambridge's highest English qualification, at the top Level C2 of the Common European Framework. Cambridge presents it as evidence of English for postgraduate study and senior professional work. You book it through an authorised exam centre. The paper-based exam runs on only a few set dates a year, and the next two are on 26 November and 12 December 2026. This guide lists the dates, explains how to book, sets out the C2 Proficiency exam pattern and grades, and gives a six-week plan with mock tests.

C2 Proficiency exam dates

From Cambridge's exam dates page, checked 20 October 2026:

Year Paper-based C2 Proficiency dates
Rest of 2026 Thursday 26 November, Saturday 12 December
2027 Saturday 6 March, Saturday 15 May, Saturday 5 June, Friday 11 June, Thursday 25 November, Saturday 11 December

With so few paper dates, missing one can mean waiting months. Cambridge says digital exams are available throughout the year through local exam centres, so if no paper date suits you, ask a centre about a digital session. Always confirm the date with your centre, and ask when its entries close.

How to book C2 Proficiency

  1. Find an authorised centre with Cambridge's exam centre search. You register with the centre, not with Cambridge.
  2. For a UK visa, choose a centre approved to offer Secure English Language Tests (SELT).
  3. Ask the centre for its paper or digital dates, entry deadline and fee.
  4. Book and pay with the centre.
  5. The centre gives you the time of your Speaking test, which is usually on a different day.

Keep ready: the identity document the centre asks for, and bring the same one on exam day.

C2 Proficiency exam pattern

Scoring. Reading, Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking each get a Cambridge English Scale score, and the overall score is their average, so all five count equally.

Overall score Result
220 to 230 Grade A at C2
213 to 219 Grade B at C2
200 to 212 Grade C at C2
180 to 199 Certificate at C1

There is no negative marking. The certificate does not expire.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next C2 Proficiency exam date?

On paper, 26 November and 12 December 2026, then 6 March 2027 (Cambridge's exam dates page, checked 20 October 2026). Digital sessions run through the year at local centres.

How do I apply for C2 Proficiency?

Register directly with an authorised Cambridge exam centre, which sets its own entry deadline and fee.

What is the C2 Proficiency pass mark?

An overall score of 200 gives a C2 certificate at Grade C. A score from 180 to 199 still earns a certificate at C1.

Is there negative marking in C2 Proficiency?

No. A wrong answer simply scores nothing, so answer every question.

Should I take C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency?

If your target asks for C1, C1 Advanced is the safer choice, and a score of 200 or more on it is reported at C2. Take C2 Proficiency if you need evidence of C2 itself, and your practice scores are already near 200.
